Research on agricultural productivity, market access, and food production systems across East Africa.

Research Focus

Key Research Questions

1

What household-level factors most strongly predict food insecurity in Uganda and across Africa?

2

How do seasonal price shocks and climate variability affect smallholder household dietary diversity?

3

Which interventions most effectively improve food security outcomes for vulnerable populations?

Why It Matters

Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda's economy, employing over 70% of the workforce and generating a quarter of GDP. Yet smallholder farmers face persistent challenges including limited access to inputs, markets, and services, leaving productivity well below its potential. Strengthening food systems is essential for food security, poverty reduction, and climate resilience across East Africa.

Our Approach

Our research examines the full agricultural system — from inputs and production to post-harvest handling, market linkages, and policy environments. We use rigorous quantitative methods including randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs to assess the effectiveness of agricultural interventions, complemented by qualitative research that captures farmer experiences and system dynamics.
