East Africa Fertiliser Market Study

Research Objectives

• Assess the structure, competitiveness, and performance of fertiliser markets across East Africa

• Identify supply chain inefficiencies and factors driving high fertiliser prices for smallholder farmers

• Examine the role of government policy, imports, and private sector actors in shaping fertiliser availability and affordability

• Provide evidence-based recommendations for market reform and policy interventions to improve smallholder fertiliser access

Methodology

The study combined primary data collection through surveys of importers, distributors, agro-dealers, and smallholder farmers across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda with secondary analysis of import data, price records, and regulatory frameworks. Value chain costing analysis decomposed the components of the farm-gate fertiliser price. Stakeholder workshops validated findings and co-developed recommendations with government, private sector, and development partner representatives.
