Financial Access for Mid-Channel Players in Agricultural Value Chains
Overview
Assessment of credit and finance access for traders and processors in Uganda's coffee and soybean value chains.
Research Objectives
Assess the financial service needs and constraints of mid-channel players in agricultural value chains in Uganda
Identify gaps in financial product design that limit access to credit for agro-dealers, aggregators, and processors
Map the financial ecosystem supporting agricultural value chains and identify leverage points for intervention
Develop recommendations for financial institutions and development partners to improve mid-channel financing
Methodology
The research combined structured interviews with mid-channel actors including agro-dealers, aggregators, transporters, and processors across multiple value chains with financial institution surveys and focus group discussions. Value chain mapping documented financial flows and identified pinch points where lack of finance constrained performance. Secondary data analysis of financial sector reports supplemented primary data collection.
Key Findings
Mid-channel actors face significant collateral and documentation barriers to accessing formal finance, limiting their ability to aggregate produce and provide timely payments to smallholders. Seasonal cash flow mismatches were identified as a critical constraint. Financial institutions expressed appetite for agri-lending but cited high transaction costs and perceived risk as barriers. Recommendations included the development of warehouse receipt financing, digital lending products, and structured trade finance instruments.
