Methodology
The study conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies and grey literature on climate adaptation and food and nutrition security in Sub-Saharan Africa published between 2000 and 2023. Inclusion criteria, data extraction protocols, and quality assessment tools followed established systematic review guidelines. Narrative synthesis was used where meta-analysis was not feasible due to heterogeneity in outcome measures.
Key Findings
Climate-smart agricultural practices including improved seed varieties, water harvesting, and agroforestry showed the strongest evidence of improving food availability outcomes. However, evidence on nutrition-specific outcomes such as dietary diversity and micronutrient intake was limited. Gender-differentiated impacts were rarely disaggregated in the reviewed literature, representing a significant evidence gap. The review informed the design of an integrated climate-nutrition research agenda for Sub-Saharan Africa.
