AERC Economic Policy Research Programme

Overview

A multi-country research initiative examining fiscal policy, agricultural taxation, and smallholder market participation across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Findings contributed to AERC policy briefs and regional trade policy consultations.

Research Objectives

  • Analyse market linkages, price dynamics, and value chain structures affecting smallholder farmers

  • Measure changes in household income, asset accumulation, and livelihood diversification

  • Generate actionable policy recommendations for government and development partners at national and regional level

Methodology

This project used rigorous mixed-methods research approaches including household surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and quantitative data analysis. Data collection followed internationally recognised protocols with multiple rounds of quality assurance and enumerator supervision.

Key Findings

Findings from this project have been used to inform policy decisions at national and regional level. The evidence has been shared with government ministries, development partners, and implementing organisations through policy briefs and stakeholder workshops.
